Michigan Moms Demand Action, Everytown Statement on Detroit Shooting That Left Three People Dead, Including a Transgender Woman
LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today released the following response after a shooting Saturday left three people dead, including a transgender woman, on Detroit’s east side. News reports have not named the victims.
“This is unacceptable,” said Emily Durbin, volunteer chapter leader with the Michigan chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “We have to do more to prevent gun violence, and that includes recognizing the heavy toll it takes on the trans community. Our thoughts are with the loved ones grieving.”
There have been at least six transgender women killed in the United States so far this year; all six of the victims were Black women who were shot and killed with a gun. In May alone, four transwomen have now died from gun violence — one death was from injuries sustained last month, and two others were from shootings two weekends ago.
