Massachusetts Moms Demand Action, Everytown Applaud Speaker DeLeo and the House for Advancing Lifesaving Red Flag Legislation

May 24, 2018

Red Flag Law Would Empower Family and Law Enforcement to Petition Courts to Temporarily Suspend a Person’s Access to Firearms If They Pose a Risk to Self or Others

Red Flag Law Could Help Prevent Firearm Suicides and Mass Shootings

BOSTON. – The Massachusetts chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety today, praised Speaker DeLeo and lawmakers in the Massachusetts House of Representatives for passing HB 3610. This Red Flag bill would empower families and law enforcement to seek an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO), a court order that would temporarily restrict a person’s access to firearms when they pose a risk of using them to harm themselves or others. The bill will now go to the Senate. More information about Red Flag laws can be found here.

STATEMENT FROM KIM LONG, VOLUNTEER LEADER FOR MASSACHUSETTS CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“Family members and law enforcement are often the first people to notice red flags that indicate someone might be a danger to themselves or others, and this legislation enables them to help protect their loved ones and their communities. We are especially grateful to have the support of Speaker DeLeo, who has been a champion for this legislation, and to the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Marjorie Decker, and we are proud to be working alongside the tireless and dedicated students and a broad coalition of gun violence prevention advocates. We urge the Senate to quickly schedule a vote on this lifesaving legislation and send it to Governor Baker’s desk.”
