Senate Bill 727 and House Bill 1424 Would Require Convicted Domestic Abusers to Turn in Their Guns; Moms Demand Action Volunteers Have Spent Entire Session Urging Legislators to Pass These Bills Currently in Committee
ANNAPOLIS, Md.—The Maryland chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today urged members of the Senate Judiciary Proceedings Committee and House Judiciary Committee to move House Bill 1424 and Senate Bill 727 out of their respective committees and onto the floor. The legislation would require convicted abusers to surrender their firearms once they become prohibited. Although current law prohibits convicted abusers from purchasing and possessing guns, it does not require that convicted abusers turn in the guns they already own.
STATEMENT FROM DANIELLE VEITH, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH THE MARYLAND CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“Maryland Moms Demand Action volunteers from across the state came to the capitol today for one reason: to remind legislators to pass HB 1424 and SB 727 out of committee. In fact, hundreds of Moms have come to Annapolis over the last few months to urge legislators to pass this common-sense legislation that would require convicted domestic abusers to turn in their guns. The legislative session ends in a matter of weeks and these life-saving bills cannot wait – and neither can Maryland women and children. We urge our Senators and Delegates to stand up for us by passing these bills out of committee. We are counting on you to do the right thing.
