Research Shows that Nearly Four out of 10 Maryland Women Have Reported Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence in their Lifetime
WHITE PLAINS, Md. – The Maryland chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today issued the following statement in response to reports that a woman was fatally shot and killed by her husband in an apparent homicide-suicide Saturday.
Research shows that nearly four out of 10 Maryland women have reported experiencing intimate partner violence in their lifetime. The costs are high: More than 187 victims died in domestic violence homicide incidents in Maryland from 2011 to 2016. And, guns are the weapon of choice: Nearly 60 percent of domestic violence homicides in Maryland were committed using a firearm, according to the most recent available data.
STATEMENT FROM DANIELLE VEITH, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH THE MARYLAND CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this horrifying shooting and to the entire White Plains community. Maryland’s leaders must do more to protect women and families from the deadly combination of guns and domestic violence.”
