MACHIAS, Maine — The Maine chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today released the following statement on reports that three people were shot and killed and another was wounded in a shooting in Machias.
“This shooting has sent shockwaves through our state, and our hearts are with the friends and families of everyone affected,” said Barbara Arsenault, a volunteer with the Maine chapter of Moms Demand Action. “So many of our communities look and feel like Machias, so this shooting hits close to home. We refuse to accept this senseless violence as normal, and we vow to honor those impacted with action.”
In Maine, more than half of all homicides involve a gun. In October, lawmakers on the Maine legislative council failed to advance several gun safety policies for consideration during the 2020 legislative session.
