NORRIDGEWOCK, Maine. – The Maine chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement in response to reports that Eugene Cole, a Somerset County sheriff’s deputy, was shot and killed this morning. According to reports, the shooter has not yet been apprehended, but he is believed to have a lengthy criminal record. Reports also indicate that the shooter was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a firearm last month in Massachusetts.

“This morning we woke up to the tragic news of a shooting in our community. We extend our deepest condolences to Officer Cole’s family, friends and the Somerset County police department. Once again this is a deadly reminder that we must do more to prevent gun violence throughout Maine.”
