Today: Senate Judiciary Hearing on Senate Bill 36, Allowing Alcohol Abusers to Carry Hidden, Loaded Handguns in Public
Moms, Teachers, Public Health Professionals Testify in Opposition to Dangerous Bill
Indianapolis, IN — Members of the Indiana chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, joined with teachers, parents, public health professionals and other supporters at the State Capitol today for the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing to testify in opposition to S 36, a bill that would allow people with two or more alcohol-related offenses within the past three years—including offenses that led to convictions or to treatment in alcohol abuse facilities—to carry hidden, loaded handguns in public. In response to today’s hearing, the Indiana chapter released the statement below.
STATEMENT FROM STEPHANIE GRABOW, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH THE INDIANA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“Guns and alcohol just don’t mix. This isn’t about limiting the rights of law-abiding, responsible gun owners. This is about keeping our families safe by preventing those with multiple alcohol offenses from carrying hidden, loaded handguns in public. Research proves what we logically know: alcohol consumption leads to an elevated risk of violent behavior, including gun violence. I urge our lawmakers to oppose this absurd legislation and work with us to create a culture of responsible gun ownership in Indiana.”
