The Indiana chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, the grassroots networks of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement following reports of a shooting over the weekend in Indianapolis that killed five people, including a pregnant woman and her unborn child, in the city’s “largest mass casualty shooting in more than a decade,” according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Randal Taylor.
“Our hearts break for the loved ones of those who were killed and for the entire community as we continue to face an epidemic of gun violence in Indianapolis,” said Jennifer Haan, a volunteer with the Indiana chapter of Moms Demand Action. “There is no more time for talk — we need action. State lawmakers are in session and we need them to fight for common-sense gun violence prevention, reject gun lobby priorities that would weaken our gun laws further, and support local violence intervention groups that are fighting this epidemic every day.”
Lax gun laws in Indiana and pandemic-related disruptions have exacerbated the root causes of gun violence and disproportionately impact Black and Latino communities. Areas across Indiana, including Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and St. Joseph County saw elevated numbers of homicides in 2020 — many of which were gun homicides.
