In yet another indication that gun violence prevention will be a marquee issue in the 2020 presidential campaign, at least 13 presidential candidates have participated as of this posting in Wear Orange to mark National Gun Violence Awareness Day. More candidates are expected to post throughout the day and Wear Orange weekend.
National Gun Violence Awareness Day is dedicated to honoring the lives of Americans affected by gun violence. Wear Orange elevates the voice of every American who demands an end to gun violence. The candidates join Americans across the country who Wear Orange in honor of the hundreds shot and killed or wounded every day by gun violence. Americans will participate in more than 800 Wear Orange events this weekend. In Congress, Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Representative Robin Kelly (D-IL-02) have introduced resolutions recognizing June as National Gun Violence Awareness Month to remember the victims and survivors of gun violence and to promote greater awareness of gun violence prevention. Numerous members of Congress joined mayors, governors and state lawmakers in wearing Orange.
Orange is the color that Hadiya Pendleton’s friends wore in her honor after she was shot and killed in Chicago at the age of 15 — just one week after performing at President Obama’s second inaugural parade in 2013. Orange invites everyone who agrees we can do more to save American lives from gun violence to do one simple thing: #WearOrange
