Wanted to make sure you saw MLive’s reporting Friday that Michigan representatives Rob VerHeulen (R-Walker) and Chris Afendoulis (R-Grand Rapids Township) have said they will vote against Senate Bills 584 and 586, dangerous bills that together would force Michigan schools to allow civilians to carry hidden, loaded handguns on their premises.
“I have always been a supporter of local control,” MLive quoted VerHeulen as saying.
Senate Bills 584 and 586 are dangerous bills that together would force Michigan elementary, middle and high schools to allow people to carry hidden, loaded handguns on their premises. SB 584 would also allow people to carry hidden, loaded handguns into college classrooms and dormitories, sports arenas, bars and other sensitive locations throughout the state. More information on the proposed legislation, which was passed by the Michigan Senate in November, is available here. Governor Rick Snyder vetoed similar legislation in 2012 and has indicated his position has not changed.
Numerous Michigan school districts, from Detroit to Traverse City to Marquette, have said they oppose the proposed legislation. Educators have also written powerful op-eds in the Oakland Daily Tribune and the Detroit Free Press explaining why they oppose the proposals.
