ICYMI: Rauner’s Office Not Saying Whether He’ll Sign Bipartisan Gun Safety Legislation Approved by Legislators With Wide Margins

June 18, 2018

Wanted to make sure you saw this weekend’s reporting from the Associated Press on the gun safety bills approved by the Illinois legislature with wide margins during this year’s legislative session.

The bills include the Combating Illegal Gun Trafficking Act, which would help reduce illegal gun trafficking and hold corrupt gun dealers accountable. Both the Illinois House of Representatives and the Illinois Senate passed the Combating Illegal Gun Trafficking Act by wide margins and with bipartisan support.

A spokeswoman for Gov. Rauner told the AP the governor’s staff is reviewing the legislation. Read the AP’s story here.

Republican governors in Florida, Vermont, Kansas and Maryland have each signed gun safety legislation into law this year.

SB 337, the Combating Illegal Gun Trafficking Act, would require background checks for gun store employees; require gun dealers to keep their business premises open for inspection by law enforcement during business hours; require training for gun dealers and gun store employees on responsible business practices and the laws applicable to selling firearms; and require video surveillance and alarm systems for all brick-and-mortar locations.
