Gun Safety Litigators Detail What’s At Stake at the Supreme Court on Second Amendment Issues

September 25, 2020

NEW YORK  — Today, litigators from three national gun safety organizations held a press call to discuss what’s at stake at the Supreme Court on Second Amendment issues. The press call featured Eric Tirschwell, Managing Director of Everytown Law; Hannah Shearer, Litigation Director of Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence; and Jonathan Lowy, Chief Counsel and Vice President of Legal at Brady.

Audio of the call is available here, and a transcript will be available later today.

“There is no question that the stakes of this appointment are high for public safety,” said Eric Tirschwell, managing director for Everytown Law. “The next Supreme Court justice could be a critical vote on cases that could put many gun laws at risk. If the Supreme Court were to adopt a new and extreme interpretation of the Second Amendment, it would open the door to a flurry of challenges of a wide range of life-saving gun laws.”

“The stakes could not be higher for this battle over who should replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court,” said Jonathan Lowy, Chief Counsel and Vice President of Legal at Brady.  This Court will decide issues of life and death, for the American people, for our democracy, and for our planet.  The Court will likely decide whether the American people still have the power to enact strong gun laws to prevent them from being shot, and health care to heal them if they do.”

“The judges President Trump is considering for the Supreme Court are not your grandparents’ Republicans,” said Hannah Shearer, litigation director of Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. “Instead, they’re endorsing the modern NRA’s vision of an unlimited Second Amendment. They’re adopting positions likely to fuel political violence and threaten the gun safety measures we depend on to keep our communities safe.”
