Colorado Moms Demand Action Volunteers and Gun Violence Survivors Testified Against Efforts to Weaken Colorado’s Strong Gun Laws During Marathon Committee Hearing on Gun Bills
DENVER –The Colorado chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and the Everytown Survivor Network, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the below statements applauding the House State and Veteran’s Affairs Committee for stopping a series of bills that would have weakened the state’s strong existing gun laws, including one bill that would have forced elementary, middle and high schools to allow people to carry hidden, loaded handguns on their property. Volunteers with the Colorado chapter of Moms Demand Action and members of the Everytown Survivor Network joined other gun violence prevention advocates to testify against these repeated attempts to undermine Colorado’s public safety at the hearing today.
STATEMENT FROM AMY CHAMBERS, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH THE COLORADO CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“We owe it not only to Colorado kids but also to the victims of gun violence and families everywhere to find ways to make our schools safe and free from gun violence. Colorado has strong gun laws already on the books and that is why we believe that putting guns into our schools is a step in the wrong direction. We applaud the committee today for voting down this extreme and misguided legislation.”
STATEMENT FROM JANE DOUGHERTY, WHOSE SISTER, MARY SHERLACH, WAS KILLED IN THE SANDY HOOK SCHOOL SHOOTING AND MEMBER OF THE EVERYTOWN SURVIVOR NETWORK:
“As the sister of an educator who was murdered in the Sandy Hook School shooting, I will continue to show up at the capitol to make sure our schools remain safe havens for learning and not battlefields. I am grateful to the lawmakers today who blocked this dangerous legislation and stood up for the history of responsible gun laws here in Colorado.”
