Groups use Independence Day to promote causes

622x350Michelle Green, a leader of the Houston chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense, said many Houstonians and Texans would be surprised to know that it’s legal to walk through the streets with a loaded rifle.

“We find it an inherently threatening action, particularly in a post-Aurora, post-Newtown world,” Leder said, referring to sites of mass shootings.

During the July 4 parade in Bellaire, about 25 members of her group, which promotes gun safety laws, marched and distributed information about their cause. Riding bikes, scooters and wagons, they shared printed material on proposed gun laws, such as universal background checks and a limit to semi-automatic assault weapons. The women also handed out materials about local leaders’ stances on gun laws and “a declaration of independence” from gun violence.

“The 2nd Amendment and laws relating to it have been overtaken by extremists,” Leder said. “We hope to encourage a culture of responsibility.”
