Gun Safety Advocates and Champions Celebrate 10 Years of Moms Demand Action and Call on Lawmakers to Strengthen Washington State Gun Safety Laws
OLYMPIA, Wash. — Today, Washington Governor Jay Inslee, over 100 Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers gathered at the statehouse to call for decisive action on gun safety during their annual advocacy day. This year’s advocacy day marks 10 years of life-saving work across the country to protect families and communities from gun violence. With numerous gun safety policies on the table this session, including a prohibition on assault weapons that recently passed the House, all eyes are set on Olympia as lawmakers have the unique opportunity to enact sweeping change.
“Our Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers are fighting to keep Washington a national leader in the fight against gun violence,” said Rebecca Elbaum, Chapter Leader of the Washington chapter of Moms Demand Action. “We are committed to building on this momentum by advocating for accountability for the gun industry, a prohibition on assault weapons, funding for community violence intervention groups, and more, which would cement our position as national leaders in gun violence prevention. We are proud to have Governor Jay Inslee in the fight with us to end gun violence.”
This year, Moms Demand Action volunteers are asking lawmakers to take action and pass proactive measures that will save lives. This comes after Moms Demand Action volunteers had major success this past election cycle — across the country 150 Moms Demand Action volunteers won their race for office, and gun violence prevention proved to be a winning issue — including in Washington where voters re-elected gun sense champion Governor Jay Inslee.
As volunteers commemorate the tenth anniversary of Moms Demand Action, they reflect on a decade’s work of advocating for the safety of families and communities from senseless acts of gun violence. In Washington, Moms Demand Action has grown to hundreds of volunteers who are on the frontlines of life-saving advocacy – all with the goal to end gun violence once and for all.
