Governor Baker Signs Bill to Address Dangerous Supreme Court Decision on Gun Permitting, Following Advocacy from Massachusetts Moms Demand Action

August 11, 2022

The Massachusetts chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety’s grassroots networks, released the following statement applauding Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker for signing legislation that would address the Supreme Court’s decision in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen, which struck down a portion of Massachusetts’ concealed carry permitting process that has helped to keep Bay Staters safe for decades.

“The decision made by the Supreme Court to weaken our common sense gun safety laws was wrong, irresponsible, and threatens the safety of communities across our Commonwealth,” said Rina Schneur, a volunteer leader with the Massachusetts chapters of Moms Demand Action. “We thank Governor Baker for signing this important provision into law — which will protect key features of our gun permitting system — and reaffirming Massachusetts’ status as a leader in the gun violence prevention movement.”

In an average year in Massachusetts, 255 people die by guns and 557 people are wounded. Gun violence costs Massachusetts $3.5 billion each year, of which $85.4 million is paid by taxpayers. More information on gun violence in Massachusetts is available here.
