ATLANTA — The Georgia chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety’s grassroots networks, today called on Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, Congressman Doug Collins, and other national Republicans to condemn Marjorie Taylor Greene after she posted an image of herself holding an AR-15 next to three female Democrats in Congress who are part of what is known as the “Squad” and saying she wanted to go on the “offense.”
“What will it take for Republicans to stop condoning Greene’s dangerous conspiracy theories and active endangerment of members of congress?” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action. “Facebook posts like these are a threat to public safety, and Republicans need to take a stand and call them what they really are: a threat to our democracy.”
“Georgia Republicans like Rep. Collins, Karen Handel and Sens. Perdue and Loeffler should stand up and condemn these vile incitements to violence,” said Courtney Spriggs, a volunteer with the Georgia chapter of Moms Demand Action. “But that doesn’t seem likely, since they’ve shown time and time again that they’re willing to look past – and even promote – Greene’s dangerous conspiracy theories and gun extremism.”
According to Media Matters for America, Greene has “expressed support for QAnon, the violence-linked conspiracy theory that the FBI has labeled a potential domestic terror threat. She has also pushed conspiracy theories about the 9/11 attacks, the killing of Democratic staffer Seth Rich, and Pizzagate, among others.” After she won her primary, President Donald Trump tweeted: “Congratulations to future Republican Star Marjorie Taylor Greene on a big Congressional primary win in Georgia against a very tough and smart opponent. Marjorie is strong on everything and never gives up – a real WINNER!”
More than 1,500 people in Georgia die every year from gun violence. More information on gun violence in Georgia is available here, and more information on gun violence in the U.S. is available here.
