Texas Senator Cornyn’s ‘Concealed Carry Reciprocity’ Bill Would Gut Gun Laws and Make The Weakest Link the Law of the Land
WASHINGTON – The Texas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement today in response to Monday’s introduction of new legislation by Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) that would undermine our nation’s gun laws and radically redefine who can carry hidden, loaded guns anywhere in America by forcing states to recognize concealed carry permits from every other state, many with significantly lower standards.
Senator Ted Cruz is a cosponsor of the legislation.
STATEMENT FROM EMILY KEOWN, VOLUNTEER LEADER WITH THE TEXAS CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“The gun lobby has been trying to pass this legislation in Congress for more than two decades. They haven’t won yet and they won’t win this time. It’s a shame that Texas’ own Senators Cornyn and Cruz are ignoring the will of everyday gun owners. Here in Texas, we have a state permit system that requires anyone who wants to carry loaded handguns in public to have a clean criminal record and some gun safety training. Texans know that ours is a common-sense system that makes us safer. Responsible gun laws are good for all of us. This legislation isn’t what this country needs and you can be sure that we’ll fight it vigilantly.”
STATEMENT FROM JOHN FEINBLATT, PRESIDENT OF EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:
“Senator Cornyn’s bill is a dream for the gun lobby and a nightmare for public safety. For centuries, cities and states have set their own reasonable, tailored limits on who can carry hidden, loaded guns in their public spaces. One size does not fit all, and this NRA-backed bill would only make the weakest link the law of the land – gutting America’s public safety laws.”
STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA, PART OF EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:
“This radical legislation, created and promoted by gun lobbyists, would upend existing state gun laws and undermine public safety laws from coast to coast. It would also go against the will of the majority of Americans – 88 percent of whom support requiring safety training and a clean criminal record in order to carry a hidden, loaded handgun in public. Moms Demand Action volunteers and gun violence survivors in all 50 states will band together with police, mayors and lawmakers to fight this dangerous legislation. The safety of our families and communities are on the line.”
