Everytown Statement: Senate Confirms Judge Barrett to the Supreme Court

October 27, 2020

‘We Deserve Leaders Who Will Work as Hard to Protect Us As Senate Republicans Worked to Rush This Nomination Through’

Everytown Working to Hold Senate Republicans Accountable at the Ballot Box for Stealing this Seat and Endangering the American People

NEW YORK –– Everytown for Gun Safety and its grassroots networks, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, today released the following statements after Senate Republicans confirmed Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court:

“We deserve leaders who will work as hard to protect us as Senate Republicans worked to rush this nomination through before November 3,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action. “Fortunately, Americans are paying attention. Our grassroots army of volunteers is working day and night to replace this Senate majority, send Donald Trump packing and give Joe Biden a mandate to pass the common-sense gun laws that Republicans refused to.”

“In confirming Judge Barrett, Senate Republicans also confirmed that they’re more worried about keeping the gun lobby happy than keeping Americans safe.” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “Now it’s the people’s turn to vote, and Senate Republicans will soon learn there’s a steep political price to be paid for ignoring America’s gun violence crisis.”

Senate Republicans broke their own rules and stole this seat by jamming Judge Barrett, a gun rights extremist, onto the Supreme Court at the behest of the NRA and the rest of the gun lobby. Everytown, Moms Demand Action, and Students Demand action will continue to work to hold them accountable for it at the ballot box. With over 60 million voters having already cast a ballot, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, the grassroots arms of Everytown for Gun Safety, are continuing to hit new outreach milestones in their efforts to get out the vote for gun sense candidates up and down the ballot.

To date, volunteers have sent over 1.5 million text messages and held over 8,800 events, with more than 35,000 individual shifts worked, to help voters create their Voter Action Plan and confirm their support for gun sense candidates. Volunteers have also met their goal of completing 1 million calls this election cycle.

Now entering the home stretch, dedicated volunteers across the country are doubling down on outreach efforts. In the past week alone, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers made over 77,000 calls and sent nearly 150,000 text messages
