Everytown Statement On Passing Of Civil Rights Hero, Congressman John Lewis

NEW YORK –– Today, Everytown for Gun Safety and its grassroots networks, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, released the following statement on the passing of Congressman John Lewis (D-GA):

“At a time when Americans are hungry for heroes, Congressman Lewis stands taller than ever,”  said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “It was an honor to count John Lewis as a partner in the fight for gun safety. As the ‘Conscience of the Congress,’ it’s no surprise that he was often on the frontlines of the gun safety movement, and his legacy lives on in the heart of every American who gets in ‘good trouble’ while fighting the good fight.”

“John Lewis’ determination and strong moral compass inspired millions of activists to get in good trouble,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action. “His voice will be deeply missed, but there’s no doubt that his story and words will live on, and continue to serve as a guiding light for all who seek a more just world. Congressman John Lewis was a gun sense champion and tireless partner to Everytown, Moms Demand Action, and Students Demand Action. Rep. Lewis was a powerful voice in the fight for congressional action on gun safety, leading the House in a sit-in to urge Republican leadership to take up gun safety measures after the mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. His historic, fearless leadership in the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s paved the way for today’s marches across the country protesting police violence and the systemic racism that subjects Black people in America to higher rates of gun violence. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
