NEW YORK –– Today, Everytown for Gun Safety and its grassroots networks, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, responded to President Donald Trump’s tweet about this week’s decisions by the Supreme Court, saying “These horrible & politically charged decisions coming out of the Supreme Court are shotgun blasts into the face of people that are proud to call themselves Republicans or Conservatives. We need more Justices or we will lose our 2nd. Amendment & everything else.”
“Trump has been encouraging gun violence against Americans for weeks, yet his incendiary comments about the Supreme Court are still shocking coming from the President of the United States,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “But Trump is right that the stakes couldn’t be higher this election, which is why we’re committed to electing Joe Biden, a proven gun sense champion, to the White House.”
“This president has not only refused to address this country’s gun violence crisis, but he routinely trivializes its toll, mocks gun violence survivors, and encourages more violence at every turn,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action. “Sixty percent of Americans have been personally affected by gun violence, and they should remember his despicable behavior when they vote in November.”
“As someone who has experienced live fire and has friends whose lives were cut short by gun suicide, I’m sickened by the president’s comments,” said Jonathan Gold, a gun owner, survivor of gun violence and volunteer with the Michigan chapter of Moms Demand Action. “Someone whose words incite gun violence isn’t fit for the Oval Office.”
Last month, President Trump encouraged gun violence against people protesting the death of George Floyd, saying “These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!”.
