WILKINSBURG, Pa. – The Pennsylvania chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, and Wilkinsburg Mayor John Thompson, a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, today released the following statements in response to a reported ambush-style mass shooting that took place in the backyard of a Wilkinsburg home late Wednesday evening. Two unidentified gunmen – who are still at large – reportedly shot and killed four females, one male and injured three others.
This incident is one of at least 147 mass shootings that have occurred in America since 2009, and it is the sixth mass shooting in 2016. A previously released report from Everytown for Gun Safety (available here) provides a comprehensive analysis of incidents in which four or more people were murdered with a gun, a widely used definition of mass shootings from the FBI. STATEMENT FROM ELIZABETH PAGEL-HOGAN, VOLUNTEER WITH PENNSYLVANIA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA
“I am heartbroken for the families whose loved ones were killed, and livid that five people were killed senselessly. None of us should have to be afraid to have a barbecue on a warm spring night, or to go to school, church or the movies. Everyday, 91 Americans are killed by guns and hundreds more are injured. Congressional and Pennsylvania lawmakers can and should do more to combat gun violence.”
STATEMENT FROM WILKINSBURG MAYOR JOHN THOMPSON, MEMBER OF MAYORS AGAINST ILLEGAL GUNS
“My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those killed and injured last night — and with all Pennsylvanians who are on edge as these shooters remain on the loose. While details are still unfolding, I can say for certain that there is more we can do to reduce the senseless violence that claims 91 American lives every day – and injures hundreds more.”
