Everytown, North Carolina Moms Demand Action, Students Demand Action Respond to Shooting at Mount Tabor High School

September 1, 2021

The North Carolina chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today released the following statement after initial reports of a shooting at Mount Tabor High School.

“Our hearts are with the Mount Tabor High School community on this terrible day,” said Grace Phillips, a volunteer with Students Demand Action in Winston Salem. “We won’t accept that a return to school also means a return to school shootings. There are common-sense, evidence-informed, proactive solutions that our lawmakers and local officials can put into place to combat this preventable epidemic – and they must do so now.”

Earlier this week, a shooting at New Hanover High School in Wilmington wounded at least one student. In an average year, 1,388 people die by guns in North Carolina, and 3,407 people are wounded by guns. 104 children and teens die by guns every year in North Carolina; firearms are the second leading cause of death for children and teens.
