Everytown, New York Moms Demand Action Respond to Attack on Two NYPD Officers in the Bronx

November 4, 2016

NYPD Officer Shootings Mark the 183rd Shooting of a Police Officer in the Line of Duty This Year

NEW YORK — The New York chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today responded to reports that two NYPD officers—Sergeant Paul Tuozzolo and Sergeant Emmanuel Kwo—were shot, Tuozzolo fatally, while responding to reports of a robbery in the Bronx.

According to Everytown for Gun Safety research, there have been at least 183 shootings of police officers in America this year. In those incidents, 48 officers have been killed and an additional 189 have been injured. The shooting comes weeks after a recent report from New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman found that nearly 90 percent of New York City crime guns come from out of state.

STATEMENT FROM JAIME PESSIN, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH NEW YORK MOMS DEMAND ACTION:

“Earlier today, two NYPD officers were shot, one fatally, while responding to a robbery in the Bronx. Our deepest condolences are with the families of the victims as well as the entire NYPD tonight. Tragedies like today’s happen all too often in this country and more must be done to prevent gun violence in America. New York has strong laws, but we know that nearly 90 percent of New York City crime guns come from out of state — that’s why lawmakers in Washington and in states across the country must continue to work to pass stronger laws that will keep guns out of dangerous hands. Everytown and Moms Demand Action will keep up the fight for policies that help keep our officers, our communities and our families safe.”
