NEW YORK — Today, Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown, released the following statements in response to Senate Democrats’ plans to hold the Senate floor tonight in order to demand that the full U.S. Senate take up gun safety legislation. The Senators are expected to call for Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to pass gun safety legislation, including background checks on all gun sales.
“If Senate Leader McConnell wants to know what leadership on gun safety looks like, he should come to the floor tonight and listen as his colleagues speak up for the millions of Americans who are demanding action to prevent gun violence,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “We applaud Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senator Chris Murphy and the Senate Democrats for making gun safety a top priority, and urge Senate Leader McConnell to pass strong background check and Red Flag laws — because the American people won’t be fooled by weak, watered down half-measures.”
“Every night in America, parents and schoolchildren lose sleep over the gun violence tearing apart their communities,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “Tonight, Senate Democrats are staying awake alongside them, and honoring the 100 Americans shot and killed — and hundreds more wounded — every day. Senate Leader McConnell has yet to call a vote on critical gun safety legislation. The safety of our families shouldn’t be a partisan issue. Our lawmakers must act, or we will replace them with leaders who will.”
