June 14, 2017

WASHINGTON – Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown, released the following statements in response to reports of a shooting Wednesday morning at Congressional baseball practice in the Del Rey neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia.

Although details are still developing, early reporting indicates that multiple people were shot, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, Congressional staff and police officers.

STATEMENT FROM JOHN FEINBLATT, PRESIDENT OF EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:

“This morning, at least one Member of Congress was shot, alongside Congressional staffers and police officers. Far too many Americans know what it’s like to be shot or have a loved one killed by gun violence. We’re grateful to Capitol Police for their quick response and our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic event.”

STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA, PART OF EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:

“I am devastated by this morning’s shooting tragedy and my heart goes out to Congressman Scalise, the Congressional staffers, Capitol Police, families and everyone affected. Americans should be able to play baseball, dance in a nightclub, and attend religious services without the threat of gun violence. We all deserve better.”
