Everytown, Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense in America Issue Statement in Support of Families Whose Loved Ones Were Killed in Aurora Theater Mass Shooting Nearly Three Years Ago

July 16, 2015

DENVER – As the verdict in the trial of the accused Aurora shooter is expected and the third anniversary approaches of the mass shooting at a movie theater that killed 12 people and left more than 70 others with life-altering injuries, Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America issued a statement of solidarity with the families and friends whose lives were forever changed on July 20, 2012.

STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA

“The victims and survivors of the Aurora Theater mass shooting are in our hearts and minds every day, but especially today, as the jury prepares to deliver a verdict in the trial and we approach the third anniversary of this tragic event on Monday. Today we are sending extra love and support to the Aurora community. Moms from all over the country are honoring all of those whose lives were taken too soon or forever changed because they went to see a movie—an activity any American should feel safe doing. Throughout the past several months, we have heard about the heroes, who gave their lives to save friends and loved ones in the theater that night; the first responders who sprung into action to treat victims and save lives; and members of a community who came together to support the families through their darkest days. As we await a verdict, we hope for peace for the families and the Aurora community. Today is an important reminder that gun violence claims the lives of 88 Americans every day, and injures hundreds more, and it can happen in any community, at any time. While no single law or policy can eliminate all acts of gun violence, Moms will not rest until Americans can truly feel safe in their places of worship, schools, and movie theaters.”
