Carry Guard Has Already Been Found to Be Illegal in New York State; California Also Reported to Be Investigating Carry Guard
NEW YORK – Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown, today applauded Washington Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler for announcing that he is considering further legal action against the NRA’s Carry Guard insurance, which Kreidler describes as “a potentially misleading insurance policy in Washington state.” California’s Insurance Commissioner is also reported to be investigating NRA Carry Guard, which promises to provide insurance coverage for legal and other costs for gun owners who shoot someone and claim self-defense.
STATEMENT FROM ERIC TIRSCHWELL, LITIGATION DIRECTOR, EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:
“The NRA’s Carry Guard insurance raises troubling legal and policy questions and encourages a culture of ‘shoot first, ask questions later.’ Washington regulators are right to question the legality of this and similar insurance products offered by others – and other state regulators should do the same.”
Starting last year, Everytown reviewed troubling legal and policy issues with Carry Guard and Everytown and Moms Demand Action brought them to the attention of regulators in a number of states.
New York regulators already found that certain insurance policies being sold in New York and marketed by the NRA “violated multiple provisions of” New York law; insurers Lockton Affinity and Chubb Limited then admitted such violations and were fined millions of dollars by New York authorities; and New York regulators said last month they are continuing to investigate the NRA’s role “in the marketing and sale of these illegal policies in New York.”
In a recent filing in a related case, the NRA admitted that it is “now involved in state regulatory agency scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions” relating to its insurance activities.
