Everytown Plans to Spend $60 Million on the 2020 Elections — Double What it Spent During the 2018 Elections; In November 2019, Everytown Invested $2.5 Million to Flip the Virginia General Assembly to a Gun Sense Majority

NEW YORK –  Today, Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund announced it is launching a $50,000 direct mail campaign ahead of the New Mexico primary elections, holding Democratic Senators Gabriel Ramos (SD-28) and Clemente Sanchez (SD-30) accountable for voting against common-sense gun safety measures, including background checks on all gun sales and red flag legislation. The mailers will go to Democratic primary voters in state Senate districts 28 and 30.

“These days, when politicians vote against common sense gun safety bills, it’s not just bad for public safety, it’s bad for their political future,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “New Mexicans have made it clear they want lawmakers who will stand up for gun safety, and now Everytown is making it clear which candidates pass that test.”

“New Mexicans voted for gun safety in the last election, but it’s clear not all our leaders were listening,” said Lorian Kostranchuk, a volunteer with New Mexico Moms Demand Action. “We’re sending a clear message that voters, regardless of political party, want action on gun safety, and will vote out lawmakers who stand in the way of meaningful gun safety reform.”

On average, New Mexico has nearly 400 gun deaths every year and gun deaths have increased 40 percent in the last decade.

During the 2019 and 2020 legislative sessions, Senator Gabriel Ramos (SD-28) and Senator Clemente Sanchez (SD-30) voted against successful legislation to require background checks on all gun sales, and New Mexico’s extreme risk law, sometimes known as a red flag law, which allows law enforcement officers to petition a court for temporary removal of a firearm when a court finds that someone poses an extreme risk to themself or others.

Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund spent $250,000 in 2018 to help elect Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, who campaigned on a gun safety platform and has signed both bills into law.

In February, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and Victory Fund announced it would spend at least $60 million on the 2020 elections, doubling what it spent during the 2020 elections. In Virginia’s 2019 elections, Everytown was the largest outside investor, spending $2.5 million to successfully flip the state’s General Assembly to a gun sense majority.
