House Bill 2074 Seeks to Resolve Rising Concerns About Guns on Campus
Earlier Today, Volunteers with the Kansas chapter of Moms Demand Action Testified in Support of the Legislation
TOPEKA, Kan. – Volunteers with the Kansas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today testified before the Kansas House’s Federal and State Affairs Committee, joining students and other concerned citizens to support HB 2074, legislation that would prevent college and universities from being forced to either allow hidden, loaded handguns inside campus buildings, or provide expensive security measures at every building entrance.
As noted in an Associated Press story published last week, there has been widespread concern among faculty and staff members about the prospect of guns on campus. The editorial board of the Kansas City Star has urged legislators to “heed the guidance of universities that don’t want concealed handguns on their campuses.” More information on guns on campus in Kansas is available here.
STATEMENT FROM JO ELLA HOYE, VOLUNTEER WITH KANSAS CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“Today’s hearing made clear, yet again, that campus communities don’t want hidden, loaded handguns in their dorms and classrooms. This proposal gives our representatives a chance to address these concerns and to send a clear message to the gun lobby that Kansas leaders won’t hesitate to take action when it comes to protecting our students and educators.”
