Delta State University Shooting is 138th School Shooting Since Sandy Hook
NEW YORK – In response to reports of today’s shooting at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, in which professor Ethan Schmidt was shot and killed in his office on campus by a fellow professor who is suspected of killing an unidentified woman earlier today in Gautier, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement. This is the 138th school shooting since the tragedy at Sandy Hook.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the students, faculty and families affected by the shooting today at Delta State University, and the loved ones of the woman killed in Gautier,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “Our universities and schools should be safe havens of learning, free from gun violence. This is at least the 138th shooting that has occurred on a school or university campus since the tragedy at Sandy Hook. And while no law can prevent every episode of gun violence, we know that common-sense laws – like requiring background checks on every gun sale – reduce violence and save lives. It’s time for lawmakers in Mississippi and in Congress to act to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. Our children and teachers deserve no less.”
