WASHINGTON– Everytown for Gun Safety released the following statement today urging the House to pass H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019, a bill that would address the “Charleston loophole” that allows licensed dealers to sell a gun after three business days even if a background check has not been completed. Everytown strongly urges Member of Congress to vote against any procedural motions that could derail the bill.
Everytown has supported efforts to close the Charleston loophole — which allowed a racist white man to arm himself and kill nine Black parishioners at Mother Emanuel church in Charleston — for years.
STATEMENT FROM JOHN FEINBLATT, PRESIDENT OF EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:
“H.R. 1112 is common-sense, bipartisan legislation that will keep thousands of guns away from people who shouldn’t have them. The House should pass it today, without any poison pills designed to score political points.”
