American Suppressor Association Took Credit for Writing the Bill to Roll Back Gun Silencer Safety Laws; Now We Know NRA Helped Write ATF White Paper Calling for Weaker Silencer Laws
NEW YORK – Everytown for Gun Safety today released the following statement in response to a breaking CNN report, based on documents uncovered by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, which found that an NRA lobbyist helped draft a memo written by then-ATF associate deputy director and chief operating officer Ronald B. Turk calling for the agency to weaken regulations on silencer sales and gun dealers.
STATEMENT BY KATE FOLMAR, COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR FOR EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:
“The gun industry already claimed credit for writing the bill to roll back gun silencer safety laws, and now we know the NRA helped write last year’s secret ATF white paper calling for the agency to weaken regulations on silencer sales and gun dealers. The ATF official who wrote this memo should resign, and the administration should be ashamed for doing the gun lobby’s bidding to weaken America’s gun laws.”
