LANSING — Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and its grassroots networks, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, declared a major victory today as voters rejected gun lobby-backed Matthew Deperno and re-elected Dana Nessel as Attorney General.
“In a time of rising armed extremism, leaders like Attorney General Nessel are absolutely essential to protecting both our lives and our democracy,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “Everytown was proud to support Attorney General Nessel’s reelection campaign, and look forward to partnering with her to keep the people of Michigan safe from gun violence.”
“Attorney General Dana Nessel has been a proven leader for the state of Michigan, and her re-election is a major win for communities across the state,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action. “This victory sends a strong message: Michiganders want leaders who will stand up for democracy and champion public safety, and they have that leader in Dana Nessel.”
“Dana Nessel is committed to gun violence prevention and diminishing its negative effects on our communities,” said Lindsay Warren, a volunteer with the Michigan chapter of Moms Demand Action. “We will be behind Attorney General Nessel every step of the way as she works to support the common-sense gun laws that we need.”
Everytown spent more than $2.3 million in Michigan this election to support gun sense candidates, including Attorney General Nessel. Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers made over six million voter contacts through phone calls, text messages, door knocks, and more across the country this election cycle to support gun sense candidates up and down the ballot.
As part of its efforts this election cycle, Everytown also released polling this fall showing that the vast majority of voters in Michigan support common-sense gun safety laws, including 93% for background checks on all gun sales. More information is available here.
