HARTFORD, Conn. — The Connecticut chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, applauded the Connecticut House of Representatives for passing HB 7223, which would require owners of pistols and revolvers to store their handguns in a locked container any time they leave them unattended in a vehicle. This would help prevent gun thefts and other unauthorized access to handguns left in cars. The legislation now moves to the Connecticut Senate for a floor vote.
“Storing guns securely, especially in cars, is a sign of responsible gun ownership,” said Kate Martin, a volunteer with the Connecticut chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “I’m thrilled to see our lawmakers support common-sense precautions we know will make our state safer. We’ll be watching the progress of this bill and implore the Senate to send it to the governor.”
HB 7223 passed just hours after the Connecticut House passed additional gun safety legislation on Tuesday night, which would prohibit undetectable, untraceable firearms and strengthen Connecticut’s responsible gun storage laws for the home. Last month, volunteers with the Connecticut chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America hosted an advocacy day to call on elected officials to pass this proposed gun safety legislation. At the advocacy day, Governor Ned Lamont indicated he would sign the legislation if and when it is sent to his desk.
