COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – While details are still developing, the Everytown Survivor Network and the Colorado chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statements in response to an active shooter situation at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood, in which at least three police officers and multiple civilians were shot and injured.
STATEMENT FROM CONI SANDERS, DAUGHTER OF TEACHER DAVE SANDERS, KILLED AT COLUMBINE HIGH SCHOOL:
“Once again, the Colorado Springs community is dealing with the tragedy of gun violence, this time affecting the very people who put their lives on the line to serve and protect us, among others. While families should be celebrating together this holiday weekend, instead they are being torn apart by senseless and preventable gun violence. As someone who knows all too well how painful it is to have a loved one’s life cut short by gun violence, my heart goes out to the victims and families who have now had their lives irrevocably altered. Eighty-eight Americans are killed by guns everyday and hundreds more are injured – that’s why we must continue to do more to address the easy access to guns in this country that is shattering our communities and threatening our way of life.”
STATEMENT FROM ERIN DACOSTA, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH THE COLORADO CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“My thoughts and prayers are with the Colorado Springs community and the families of the victims. Details are still unfolding about what transpired in Colorado Springs today, but it is especially heartbreaking to learn of this tragedy when families should be together celebrating the holiday. As a member of the Colorado chapter of Moms Demand Action, I am proud of the progress we have made to address gun violence here in Colorado, but there is still more we can and must do to keep guns out of dangerous hands. We should not live in fear of being killed or injured doing things all Americans should feel safe doing. That is not the country we want to live in and it’s why we will keep up our work for a safer America.”
