Authorities Report at Least One Person Shot and Killed, Several Injured; a Man Has Been Detained for Questioning
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The California chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement in response to reports of a shooting at Chabad of Poway Synagogue near San Diego. Authorities report that a gunman opened fire during services on the last day of Passover, killing at least one person and wounding several. The investigation is still ongoing, and at least one person has been detained for questioning.
While the shooter’s motive is still unclear, this shooting comes six months to the day after an anti-Semite shot and killed 11 people and wounded seven more at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh.
“My heart is heavy today thinking of the victims of the shooting at Chabad of Poway Synagogue during a time that should be a celebration for the Jewish community,” said Nikki Faddick, volunteer with the California chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “No one should have to fear for their lives as they gather with their community to worship, but that is the devastating reality of our country that we face today. As we wait for more details, our thoughts are with the families of those injured.”
