Reports Indicate at Least 12 People Were Shot and Killed
LOS ANGELES – The California chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement in response to reports of a mass shooting that killed at least 12 people on Wednesday at Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks and wounded a dozen more. The shooting took places during “college country night,” and it’s reported that students from Pepperdine University and California Lutheran University were present.
Research by Everytown for Gun Safety shows that this is at least the 193rd mass shooting since January 2009, and the 17th mass shooting this year. Everytown defines mass shootings as those in which four or more people are shot and killed, excluding the shooter.
STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“I’m heartbroken that once again, what should have been a happy and fun night was devastated by gun violence. My heart is with all of those whose sense of safety was shattered last night. We should be able to go out to a bar without fearing for our safety, but because of our country’s lax gun laws, there is no safe place. We must act to protect our families from gun violence.”
STATEMENT FROM LA’SHEA CRETAIN, A CALIFORNIA-BASED MEMBER OF THE EVERYTOWN SURVIVOR NETWORK WHO, 20 YEARS AGO, WAS SHOT FIVE TIMES AND SURVIVED:
“I am praying for those whose lives were ended or forever changed in Thousand Oaks last night, and I’m also committed to acting in their honor. Gun violence affects far too many of us. Don’t wait until it is your loved ones to get involved in this fight – we must act now to stop this crisis.”
