Broad Coalition Urges California Senate to Pass AB 2047 Ahead of Key Vote
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Cities of Los Angeles, Alameda, and Santa Rosa, alongside the California Police Chiefs Association, California Medical Association, California Federation of Teachers, San Diego County School Boards Association, and dozens of community, faith, and gun violence prevention organizations are urging California lawmakers to pass AB 2047, the Firearm Printing Prevention Act, to address the growing threat of 3D-printed firearms.
California lawmakers have taken considerable steps to address the rise of traditional ghost guns, but now criminals are increasingly turning to 3D printers to manufacture unserialized firearms at home, creating a second wave of the ghost gun crisis. AB 2047 would require 3D printers sold to consumers in California to include technology to prevent the printing of firearms and illegal gun parts, helping stop illegal gun manufacturing at the source while preserving legitimate innovation in and uses of 3D printing.
California’s strong gun laws make 3D printing guns all the more appealing for people prohibited from owning firearms. In 2025, domestic abusers, teenagers, and large-scale criminal suppliers were found manufacturing 3D-printed firearms in California.
“California has a long history of leading the nation in addressing emerging gun violence threats before they become larger public safety crises,” said Sarah Berger, a volunteer with the California chapter of Moms Demand Action. “Today, 3D-printed firearms are the next generation of ghost guns. As this technology becomes more accessible, people who cannot legally purchase a firearm can evade California’s gun safety laws by manufacturing untraceable firearms at home. The broad coalition supporting AB 2047, from cities and police chiefs to doctors, educators, students, and community leaders, reflects a shared commitment to stopping illegal gun manufacturing at the source before this threat spirals out of control. It also gives the tech industry the opportunity to innovate towards safety. We urge lawmakers to pass AB 2047.”
