Senate Bill 1122 Would Prevent Local Government from Requiring Background Checks for All Gun Sales
PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Arizona chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and a member of the Everytown Survivor Network, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety today criticized the House for passing Senate Bill 1122, a dangerous piece of legislation that would threaten public safety. SB 1122 would seek to prevent state and local officials from requiring background checks for all gun sales, the single-most effective measure to keep guns out of the hands of felons and domestic abusers.
STATEMENT FROM EMILY NOTTINGHAM, A MEMBER OF THE EVERYTOWN SURVIVOR NETWORK WHOSE SON GABE ZIMMERMAN WAS SHOT AND KILLED IN THE 2011 ‘CONGRESS ON YOUR CORNER’ MASS SHOOTING:
“I’m extremely disappointed in yesterday’s vote. SB 1122 is unnecessary legislation that would make it more difficult to keep guns out of the hands of convicted criminals and domestic abusers. This gun lobby-backed bill threatens the ability to make our communities safer. As an Arizonan and a gun violence survivor, I urge Governor Ducey to veto SB 1122.”
STATEMENT FROM ANNIE LAMOUREAUX, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH THE ARIZONA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTON:
“Unfortunately, our elected leaders responded to the gun violence we see all too often in Arizona by passing a gun lobby-backed bill that will put our communities in danger. Senate Bill 1122 does nothing but ensure that localities cannot require background checks for all gun sales to keep guns out of the hands of felons and other people with dangerous histories. More than 90 people are shot and killed and hundreds more injured every day in this country. Our elected officials should be doing more for public safety in our state and I strongly urge Governor Ducey to stand up for his constituents by vetoing this dangerous piece of legislation.”
