Everytown Research Shows That More Than Half of the Women Killed with Guns in the U.S. are Killed by Their Partners
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alabama chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today responded to the fatal shooting of three people in a Gardendale home this morning. According to reports, the shooter is still at large.
Research shows that more than half of women killed with guns in the U.S. are killed by their current or former partner. While this tragedy was not a mass shooting by the commonly used definition of four fatalities excluding the shooter, an Everytown for Gun Safety report found that most mass shootings in America are related to domestic or family violence.
STATEMENT FROM ANNE LEADER, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH THE ALABAMA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“This tragic shooting once again brings home the dark and terrifying connection between domestic violence and gun violence. According to news reports, the shooter has a history of domestic violence, and a protection from abuse order had recently been issued against him. This is someone who should never have had a gun. But loopholes in our gun laws make it all too easy for dangerous people to get their hands on a firearm. I mourn for those killed today and their loved ones. I’m also more committed than ever to keep demanding better of our lawmakers. We can’t keep letting gun violence ravage our communities. We have to do more to keep Alabama families safe from gun violence.”
