April 14, 2015

Wayne Community College Shooting is the 114th Since Newtown; See Full List Here

In response to yesterday’s shooting at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, where a longtime school employee, Ron Lane, was shot and killed, the North Carolina chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the statement below. Everytown and Moms Demand Action keeps track of instances in which a gun is discharged at American schools since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School and yesterday’s shooting in North Carolina is the 114th since Newtown. The full list is available here.

Statement from Sarah Green, Volunteer Chapter Leader of North Carolina Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America:

“Our thoughts go out to the family of Mr. Lane and the Wayne Community College staff and students. Working on a college campus myself at Wake Forest University, I cannot fathom the shock and terror the community is undergoing in light of what unfolded yesterday. Our college campuses should be places of higher learning, safe from the terror of gun violence that kills 88 Americans every day. Yesterday’s fatal shooting marks the 114th school shooting since the tragedy in Newtown – seven of which have occurred in North Carolina. Our college campuses should not be the frontline of America’s gun violence. This is unacceptable and we need to do everything we can – and demand our leaders do the same – to prevent the next tragedy.”
