CONCORD, N.H. – Today, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and the New Hampshire chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released new polling conducted by SurveyUSA on behalf of Everytown.
“This data confirms what we have long known to be true,” said Deidre Reynolds, volunteer leader with the New Hampshire chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “The people of New Hampshire support common-sense gun legislation. We urge our lawmakers to vote for the upcoming gun safety legislation that will protect our families.”
Upcoming gun safety legislation includes HB 687, which would create an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) law, also known as a Red Flag law. This legislation allows family members and law enforcement officers to petition a court to temporarily keep guns out of the hands of people in crisis when there is evidence that they pose a serious risk of harming themselves or others. The House Criminal Justice Committee will vote next Wednesday on HB 687 as well as on HB 514, which creates a seven-day purchase waiting period before a licensed dealer can sell a firearm. Additional gun violence prevention legislation includes HB 109, legislation that would require criminal background checks for all commercial gun sales, and HB 564, which would to prohibit guns in K-12 schools.
Among other findings, the poll found that:
- 90 percent of Granite Staters and 85 percent of Granite State gun owners support criminal background checks for all gun sales
- 81 percent of Granite State gun owners support ERPO legislation
- ERPO legislation has strong bipartisan support: 71 percent of those who identify as strong Republicans and 88 percent of strong Democrats indicated support
- 75 percent of respondents support prohibiting guns in K-12 schools
- 81 percent of New Hampshire voters support a 7-day waiting period for gun sales
