HB 8 Would Close a Dangerous Gap in Federal Law That Allows Convicted Criminals and Others With Dangerous Histories to Purchase Guns Without a Background Check
SANTA FE, N.M. – The New Mexico chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today applauded the House of Representatives for passing HB 8, legislation that would require background checks on all gun sales in the state. Similar legislation to require background checks on all gun sales, SB 8, now awaits a Senate floor vote.
Federal law requires licensed gun dealers to conduct criminal background checks on gun sales, but a loophole exists that allows unlicensed sales, including sales online and at gun shows, to take place without background checks. Twenty states have passed laws to close this loophole for the sale of handguns, but New Mexico has yet to take action.
“I’m thrilled to see this common-sense legislation sail through the House today,” said Emilie De Angelis, volunteer chapter leader with New Mexico Moms Demand Action. “I’m grateful to Rep. Sariñana and all members of the House who have championed this legislation to make New Mexico safer for all of us.”
