New Jersey Moms Demand Action, Everytown Applaud New Jersey Legislature for Passing Gun Violence Prevention Bills

June 7, 2018

TRENTON, N.J. – Today the New Jersey chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, applauded the New Jersey State Senate for passing bills to help prevent gun violence. These bills are now headed to Governor Murphy’s desk, and he has indicated support. These bills include:

  • A1217/S2259, a Red Flag bill that would create an Extreme Risk Protective Order, a type of court order that can temporarily restrict a person’s access to firearms when they pose a risk of harming themselves or others and that can help prevent warning signs from turning into tragedies;
  • A2757, which would require background checks for all gun sales, adding a point-of-sale check on all gun sales to the state’s purchase permit system to help keep guns out of the hands of prohibited purchasers;
  • A2761/S102, which would limit magazine capacity to 10 rounds, lowering the current maximum of 15;
  • S2465, which would prohibit ghost guns, untraceable firearms that people can build themselves, avoiding background check requirements;
  • A2759, which would prohibit the manufacture, possession, sale and transport of armor piercing ammunition except for law enforcement officials and members of the military; and
  • A2758/S2376, which would strengthen New Jersey’s concealed carry permitting system.

STATEMENT FROM BRETT SABO, VOLUNTEER LEADER WITH THE NEW JERSEY CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“Gun safety measures such as background checks, high-capacity magazine limits and a system to empower families and law enforcement to act on red flags before they escalate into tragedies can all help save lives. We are thrilled our lawmakers listened to New Jerseyans who want to do more to prevent gun violence in our communities. The passage of these bills reaffirms that New Jersey is a national leader on common-sense gun policies, and we look forward to watching Governor Murphy sign them into law.”
