Moms Demand Action Reacts to Gov. Christie’s Veto of Commonsense Gun Laws in NJ

August 17, 2013

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is disappointed that Gov. Chris Christie vetoed bills tonight that would have improved background checks, mandated firearm safety training for new permit applicants, and banned a military style rifle that has no place in civilian life. The vast majority of New Jerseyans support these measures.

Ultimately, Gov. Christie chose to put politics above the safety of New Jersey children and families. Almost 200 Garden State residents have been shot and killed this year, and the state has endured an especially violent summer. The Governor’s cowardly decision to veto these common-sense bills after business hours on a Friday indicates that he is aware that his actions are both wrong and unpopular.

Gov. Christie failed New Jersey families today. He had an opportunity to show true leadership and help make our families safer. He may have feared the wrath of the gun lobby, but the fierce determination of protective moms will be much harsher. We had hoped Gov. Christie would be a leader on gun reform. Instead, he chose to be a pawn. New Jersey moms will vote accordingly.
