Moms Demand Action Executive Director Angela Ferrell-Zabala Joins Vice President Harris for Conversation on the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act

April 15, 2024

LAS VEGAS — Today, Moms Demand Action Executive Director Angela Ferrell-Zabala joined Vice President Harris and actress Xochitl Gomez in Las Vegas, Nevada, to highlight the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) and discuss how Nevada communities have been taking steps to keep students safe through secure storage resolution, mental health funding, and the other aspects of BSCA improving public safety across the country.

“Vice President Harris understands that the American people overwhelmingly support common-sense gun safety measures that will make their communities safer,” said Angela Ferrell-Zabala, executive director of Moms Demand Action. “As we discussed today, we need a holistic approach to solving our gun violence crisis. The Biden-Harris Administration has taken lifesaving action on gun safety, and I’m confident that they will continue delivering on their promise to prevent senseless gun violence in our country.”

Last week, the Department of Justice and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) finalized a new rule implementing BSCA, which will require unlicensed gun sellers to become licensed firearms dealers and, in turn, run background checks on their customers.

The first federal gun safety bill to pass in almost 30 years, BSCA established an enhanced background check process for gun buyers under age 21, provides federal funding to implement state Extreme Risk laws, helps disarm more domestic abusers by addressing the dating partner loophole, and makes critical investments in community violence intervention programs, among other life-saving items.
