Moms Demand Action Applauds Introduction of Extreme Risk Protection Order Modernization

March 4, 2020

The Connecticut chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement applauding Judiciary Chairmen Steve Stafstrom and Gary Winfield for introducing HB 5448, legislation that would modernize Connecticut’s extreme risk law by allowing family and household members who recognize that their loved ones are in crisis to ask a court to temporarily remove their firearms.

“Family members are often the first people to realize when a loved one is in crisis,” said Alexis Gevanter, a volunteer with the Connecticut chapter of Moms Demand Action. “That’s why it’s so important to make sure that they have the tools to stop gun violence and gun suicide before it happens. Connecticut’s extreme risk law has been proven to save lives – and through this modernization, it can save even more.”

Currently, Connecticut’s extreme risk law only enables law enforcement to seek extreme risk orders, temporarily removing guns from people who could be a risk to themselves or others. Even so, one study showed that the law reduced firearm suicide by 14%.
