Moms Demand Action Applauds Gov. Cuomo and New York Legislature for Passing Gun Safety Measures in 2020 Budget

April 2, 2020

The New York chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today released the following statement after the New York General Assembly passed the 2020 budget, which includes provisions that will disarm domestic abusers, measures to prohibit individuals from gun ownership if they commit a serious misdemeanor offense in another state, and the Hate Crime Domestic Terrorism Act. The budget now heads to Governor Cuomo, who is expected to sign.

“Gun violence prevention has long been a priority for New York lawmakers, and today is no different,” said June Rubin, a volunteer with the New York chapter of Moms Demand Action. “As this year’s budget reflects, we have to do more to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and other people who shouldn’t have them. We’re grateful to the General Assembly and Governor Cuomo for always putting the safety of New Yorkers first.”

Across the country, calls to domestic violence hotlines have increased as more Americans are told to stay in homes with their abusers. When a domestic abuser has access to a gun, they are five times more likely to kill their victim.
