MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Michigan chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, responded to a shooting today at Central Michigan University. While details are still unfolding, reports indicate two people were shot and killed on campus.

According to Everytown research, this is at least the 23rd school shooting nationwide in 2018. Everytown and Moms Demand Action have kept an index of school shootings in America since 2013 – recording anytime a firearm is discharged inside or onto school building or on or onto a school campus or grounds, including: injuries, fatalities, suicides and unintentional discharges. Any time a gun is discharged on school grounds, it is a tragedy.

STATEMENT FROM KATHY KINKEMA, A VOLUNTEER WITH THE MICHIGAN CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“As our country talks about gun violence prevention in the wake the Florida school shooting, today two more people were shot and killed on a university campus. It is time for action, and our elected leaders must prioritize the safety and well-being of our school campuses. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. But thoughts and prayers aren’t enough, which is why Moms Demand Action volunteers will not rest until we pass strong legislation to keep guns out the hands of people with dangerous histories or intentions. If Congress won’t act, I urge the Michigan legislature to support gun violence prevention legislation.”
